two birds, one stone

An update on the multiple rants and raves that seem to be finding a real comfortable place here on steenblogen:

Pacanukeha sent this in a while back in re blogging and the academy. Seth Finklestein's (Infothought) "Blogging Effects as Quack Medicine" speaks to what he calls "blog evangelism," "survivorship bias" and the need for caution for all bloggers trying to move on up in the academy. Some good links there too, definitely worth a peek.

And today, 340mps dropped me this link. A beautiful analogy drawn between baseball and the academy by Lawyers, Guns and Money. A choice quote:
If you want to hire a good academic, you should focus on their academic work and teaching, not on what television programs they watch (even if it's easier to do a quick google search than to look carefully at someone's dissertation.) And if you want to win the division title every year, you have players do things because they actually work and are connected to developing their skills...
Funny how everything comes to be related, and how some links end up being made eventually...
